We are Ana and Cecile, Academic Commissioners at SCOPE for the 2025-2026 academic year. Our role is to ensure that all our academic events run seamlessly by leading nine committees. We communicate with our internal and external partners daily to guarantee success. These are the committees we lead:
International Economic Orientation & International Financial Orientation
We're planning two incredible trips for second-year students. These trips will take place during skills period six and are being organised by two committees in collaboration with two professors from the university. We want to ensure that students have a unique and valuable learning experience. The committees have planned one trip that is more financially focused and the other more economically focused. I am responsible for organising all of the operational aspects of the trips, including flights, hotel stays, social activities, and convincing companies to participate in the events. In the past, we have travelled to some fantastic destinations such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Brazil, the US, Canada, Japan, and many more. This year, we have chosen Hong Kong for IFO and Ho Chi Minh City for IEO.
Symposium
The Symposium is one of the largest academic events of the year, typically held in October or November. The event features academic speakers and workshops, as well as discussions and debates with participating companies. The committee selects a theme around which the event is organised. In recent years, the Symposium has been an enjoyable event to organise.
Academic Series
This committee comprises two sub-committees: the Academic Workshops and the Academic Lectures.
The Academic Workshops Committee organises personal skills-enhancing workshops every period, which include workshops in Excel, PowerPoint, Influencer Marketing, and many more. As a committee member, I can collaborate with the other members to organise creative and enjoyable workshops. The Academic Lectures committee aims to invite interesting speakers to Maastricht every period to talk about specific topics ranging from cryptocurrency to leadership skills.
Consulting Case Challenge
One of the newest academic events organised by SCOPE involves finding five to six local companies currently facing strategic issues. As an organiser, your role is to put them in contact with previously selected students who will act as consultants. The event is mainly focused on coaching, so the students have the opportunity to meet with academic and professional coaches. This is a joint venture between SBE and SCOPE, and you will be organising together with a committee of six people to handle all operational aspects of this two-month event.
Business Analytics
A new academic committee has been formed with the aim of providing students with a platform to enhance their skills and knowledge in the field of business analytics. The committee is currently organizing a series of events, including lectures, workshops, and a business case/hackathon. These events are designed to help students learn practical skills, network with industry professionals, and gain hands-on experience in their respective fields. The committee has the freedom to plan and execute different events, which makes it interesting.
Business Case Challenges
BCC is a new initiative that started last September 2024 by SCOPE Actives. The committee organizes workshops and trainings in how to solve case competitions organized by companies. Moreover, we try to bring students together so they can form a team and sign up for a competition together. Since the Committee is still very young, there is a lot of room for you to form it during your board year. During the past semester, we established a cooperation with the ICC Advisors.
Career and Development Days
The Career and Development Days were organized by the university before, so this year was the first time it was organized by a committee. The CDD is a three-day event with different kinds of workshops and presentations to equip students with the necessary skills, such as Excel or negotiation.
I hope I have provided you with a brief overview of the academic events that you could organize as the next Academic Commissioner. You also have the liberty to add other interesting academic events to SCOPE’s event portfolio. If you want to learn more about my daily operations as an Academic Commissioner on the SCOPE Maastricht board, feel free to contact me via email: academic@scope-maastricht.nl :)
Events I did on my own (Cecile):
Brussels Trip
The Brussels Trip is a Day Trip where Students visit Institutions of the European Union. This year, we visited the European Parliament and the European Commission. Since it is only a one-day trip, it is very doable to organize it alone, so no committee is needed.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Cecile and Ana
